Extra protection for seahorses

We are pleased to announce increase protection for two vulnerable British Seahorse species. As of April 06th 2008, the Spiny and Short-Snouted Seahorses will receive extra protection against being sold, killed, injured or taken from the wild under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. The protection will also make it an offence to disturb or damage their place of shelter.

We welcome the publication of a draft Marine Bill as an important step towards restoring the health of the UK’s seas. The draft Marine Bill was launched on 3 April 2008 by the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.

Stronger EU Shark Conservation Actions

In a bid to encourage a new era of responsible EU shark fisheries management, PADI and Project AWARE, together with the Shark Alliance (a coalition of shark conservation organisations) have lobbied the European Parliament to promote immediate shark conservation actions and a strong community Plan of Action (CPOA) for Sharks to ensure sustainable shark fisheries for the future.

Protect Our Sharks 

The second, annual European Shark Week will take place 11-19 October, 2008. It’s a unique opportunity for people across Europe to demonstrate their support for shark conservation in a way that can really effect change. We welcome your participation. Read more (and sign the petition).

The seahorse survey is turning out to be great fun and it’s not too late to join in. We saw a marbled ray and an eagle ray during a recent dive off Illa Mateau.

In addition to the general Posidonia oceanica monitoring, where we look at the abundance and diversity of flora and fauna within this protected seagrass habitat, this summer we intend to survey for seahorses and pipefish specifically.

They are well camouflaged and difficult to spot, so we need eagle-eyed volunteer divers to join in the hunt! So come on Eco-divers - get your dose of fish identification this summer. It’s going to be a hot one according to the Catalan Met Office’s forecasts.

Two independent contacts have recognised this blenny as Parablennius pilicornis.
